When working with a conventional computer mouse, the bones of the forearm are in an unnaturally crossed position and after a short time, pain and fatigue of the entire forearm occurs. Prolonged use of such a mouse may cause chornic problems with the need to seek medical attention.

Carpal tunnel syndrome or computer mouse syndrome - a modern health problem

The use of ordinary office mice is associated with a modern computer-related disease - the so-called carpal tunnel syndrome (also known as carpal tunnel syndrome or RSI). This is an oppression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel, which is located in the wrist of the hand. The median nerve passing through this tunnel transmits impulses from the brain to the thumb, index and middle fingers and part of the ring finger. In healthy people who do not overload the wrist area, the carpal tunnel provides enough space for the median nerve to pass through, so that the fingers are adequately supplied with impulses from the brain and thus retain their full functionality and sensitivity.

The primary symptoms of this syndrome include tingling and pain in the first three fingers (thumb, index and middle fingers), resembling the sensation of a hand being crossed. There is also impaired sensitivity of the hand, manifested by a reduced ability to grip firmly, and clumsiness of the hand in general (ultimately leading to objects falling out of the hand). Symptoms are often present even at rest and the pain may extend to the forearm and shoulder. In the early stages, the solution is simple - stop using a conventional computer mouse immediately and exercise the hand regularly. In the advanced stage, endoscopic surgery in the wrist is necessary to release the carpal tunnel or increase its patency. In a fully developed syndrome, it is necessary to cut the wrist ligaments, which removes the pressure on the nerve.

According to the State Institute of (SZU), it is the most common occupational disease in the Czech Republic and the number of patients is increasing every year.

All of these problems can be prevented very easily by using an ergonomic vertical mouse, in which the user's hand and forearm are in a natural position and there is no unnatural crossing of tendons and bones or oppression of the median nerve in the wrist.
