The sway bar is used to reduce body roll over irregular roads or during fast cornering. It does this by connecting opposite (left and right) wheels together.

The sway bar attaches to the vehicle using brackets, and to isolate the sway bar from the vehicles chassis and the brackets, bushings are used. These bushing are made of rubber though, so over the years they will begin to break down and will no longer isolate the sway bar as intended.
