This telescope is a very good choice for beginners. Many astronomers started their observations from small refractors. There are few reasons why. In the first place, the easy of use and transport, also if you live in the suburbs of big city, light pollution is very common problem for astronomers. So Sky-Watcher Evostar series refractor could be the best choice for lunar and planetary observations. Always remember, the best scope is the most used one. Evostar series optical design includes 2 multicoated for maximum light transition and contrast, air spaces lenses. It’s perfect for lunar observations as well for planetary exploration. You’ll see rings of Saturn, Jupiter belts, with brightest satellites. Even some of the brightest deep sky objects could be observed from a dark site. Also it is a very good choice for terrestrial observations. Don’t be concerned by smaller aperture comparing to reflectors. Under average seeing conditions a 3" refractor will usually outperform an average 4" reflector for seeing details on the Moon and planets, splitting binary stars, and resolving globular clusters. Why? Unlike reflectors and catadioptrics (Schmidt-Cassegrains, etc.), refractors do not have a secondary mirror obstruction or multiple-reflection optical path to introduce light-scattering diffraction and internal reflections that brighten the sky background, reduce contrast, and smear images. Refractors also have the highest light transmission – the percentage of the light gathered by the scope that actually reaches your eye. It’s a perfect choice if you’re looking for low maintenance, easy to use telescope. The aperture isn’t so important since the Moon and planets are all brightly lit by the Sun, a large light-gathering capacity is not as important as high magnification within the solar system. This mount is a perfect companion to small refractors. This all-metal alt-azimuth mount is exceptionally sturdy and easy to operate. It features slow-motion control cables on both axes, allowing horizontal and vertical operation. It is perfect for terrestrial observations.
